What is NTS?
"Network
Telephony Services"
As its name
says, NTS blends the world of telephones and TTYs to the world of networks and
the internet.
NTS uses
client software called "NexTalk" on desktops, gateways and one or more
servers
Any NTS
client can create text conversations or instant messaging to any other client
over the network. NTS is essentially a "text telephone system" that
lives alongside the regular phone system. NTS text calls are "telephone
like" with call transfers, call conferences, and mailbox messaging for
unanswered calls. The NTS client allows text chat and messaging with TTYs,
other clients, or browsers. When the user is logged in, the NexTalk interface
is a window like the one shown below.
NTS
clients connect to NTS server software across a LAN, WAN or across the Internet
The NTS
server software performs all of the connection, supervisory and control
functions for the clients. The server software has many modules including log
in, connection, transferring and conferencing of calls. The NTS server also
includes the physical hardware that connects the computer with the telephone
system.
Accessibility
and NTS
Traditionally,
NTS has been used for its strong accessibility features, particularly for deaf
persons. Using NTS, an organization can make every employee accessible to deaf
callers, and provide a powerful communications tool for deaf employees.

More Details
NTS
"calls"
NTS sets up
an internal "conference call" for all text calls, and these calls are
"multi-media conference bridges". Any NTS call participant in a call
can support any combination of incoming or outgoing text or voice streams and
new participants can be added as incoming "joins" or by
"dialing" and creating an outgoing call.
NTS
"scripts"
Most NTS
capabilities and features are controlled by "scripts". NTS scripts
can be created or modified at any time, so NTS operations can be modified in a
very flexible way.
NTS
gateways
NTS
connects to other devices using "gate- ways". Gateways are software modules
within NTS. Examples of NTS gateways include: • The NTS Telephony Services (TS)
gateway connects NTS to phone devices like TTYs and voice phones. • The NTS
Internet Gateway (IG) connects NTS to browsers. • The NTS SMTP Gateway connects
NTS to email. • The new V.151 Gateway connects NTS to the V.151 protocol as
used in Cisco switches. • The NTS "anything to anything" architecture
means gateway "things", or NTS clients, can call any other gateway
"thing" or client. A single NTS call can consist of any combination
of gateway end- points and/or NTS client end- points. A single NTS call might
consist of two, or dozens, of participants.

Other Features
NTS and
instant messaging
NTS offers
simple, secure, and flexible text instant messaging con- trolled by the
organization. Send IMs to one or multiple NTS users in a simple
"Post-It™" pop-up box or a traditional Windows form. Each user can
view their history of IMs, and NTS maintains complete IM auditing and usage
statistics for system administrators.
NTS and
network security
A strong
advantage of NTS is its proven security model. NTS systems are installed at
many high security networks such as the IRS, and U.S. Department of Defense
sites such as the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet, the Pentagon, and Air Force and
Army bases.
NTS and Call Centers
Call
Center Solutions™ (CCS), based on NTS 6.0 can "bolt on" to any voice call center to
add support for TTY calls and web assistance. NTS supports advanced call center
features such as "silent observe" by Supervisors of agent TTY or web
calls. (For more information on CCS, see the CCS 6.0 Fact Sheet.)
Examples
of NTS calls
Example 1 -
an NTS client receives an Incoming TTY call from a deaf caller: a TTY caller
into NTS will receive text menus, call transfer options, and the ability to
leave text messages for users or groups. All the features and services voice
callers expect in an Interactive Voice Response ("IVR") system can be
offered to text callers with NTS. Example 2 - an NTS client places an outgoing
call to a TTY. Any user of NTS running the client software can initiate calls
to TTYs. Example 3 - browser callers using a standard web browser can create
text calls into the NTS system if the NTS system has the correct gateways
installed.
Compatibility
with existing IT
NTS
is compatible with most IT networks and telephone installations. Check with an
NXi representative with specific questions.
