9-1-1 Issues

• 9-1-1 is PSTN only

  • Deaf community shifting to broadband and wireless only

  • Dropping landline, especially the young

  • No way to call into 9-1-1

• IP-based relay services are waived from handling 9-1-1 calls

• But FCC recently ruled that VoIP providers must provide a way into 9-1-1

  • Customers cannot opt out but must be informed of any limitations

  • Can the Internet text relay and VRS be far behind?

  • Will solutions solve billing problems for intrastate?
